N12 SneedSpeed Crate Engine
Street Series
The N12 SneedSpeed Crate Engine is a fully assembled long block for R55–R57 MINI Cooper models with the naturally aspirated N12 engine.
This engine exists because the N12 does not need fantasy race parts. It needs to be built correctly.
We know that because we race this platform.
SneedSpeed builds and supports SCCA B-Spec MINI race cars based around the N12 engine. In B-Spec, you do not get to hide behind exotic parts, big power adders, or catalog-built nonsense. The rules keep the engines stock-based, which means the difference comes down to the boring stuff that actually matters:
- Machine work
- Ring seal
- Bearing clearances
- Oil control
- Timing reliability
- Cylinder head condition
- Assembly discipline
That is where good engines are made.
The same lessons that keep an N12 alive in B-Spec racing are the same lessons that make a better street engine. If it survives sustained RPM, heat cycles, and race abuse on stock-based parts, it is the right foundation for a daily-driven MINI that needs to last.
Built From Real N12 Racing Experience
Most N12 engine problems are not mysterious.
They come from wear, heat, timing system issues, oil control problems, sealing problems, and rebuilds done by shops that treat the engine like any other four-cylinder.
That is not good enough.
The SneedSpeed N12 Street Series is built from real platform experience. We know where these engines fail. We know what matters. We know what has to be measured, corrected, cleaned, replaced, and verified before the engine ever goes in the car.
This is not a junkyard replacement.
This is not a cheap rebuild with fresh paint.
This is not “good enough.”
This is a properly machined, properly assembled N12 long block built for street reliability with racing knowledge behind it.
Core Assembly Standards
Every N12 SneedSpeed Crate Engine is built with:
- Fully rebuilt N12 engine block
- New pistons
- New piston rings
- New bearings
- New gaskets and seals
- Balanced rotating assembly
- Refreshed cylinder head
- Corrected N12 wear and failure points
- SneedSpeed assembly, clearance, and inspection standards
- Fully assembled long block ready for installation
Every engine is assembled with attention to oil control, ring seal, timing system integrity, and long-term durability.
Because that is what keeps the engine alive.
Street Series Configuration
The N12 SneedSpeed Crate Engine is currently offered in Street Series configuration only.
That is intentional.
For the naturally aspirated N12, reliability and proper assembly matter more than fake tier names and inflated performance claims. This engine is built for stock and lightly modified cars that need a strong, clean, dependable foundation.
Street Series Features
- New pistons and rings
- OEM-style connecting rods
- Refreshed cylinder head
- Street-oriented camshaft profile
- Stock-style valve springs
- Smooth idle
- Strong low and midrange response
- Factory-like drivability
- Improved long-term reliability
The goal is simple: build an N12 that feels tighter, cleaner, and more dependable than the worn-out engine that came out of the car.
Why B-Spec Racing Matters to a Street Engine
A street buyer may not care about lap times.
That is fine.
But street buyers should care about how an engine is built.
B-Spec racing matters because it punishes weak engines without allowing the builder to solve everything with expensive aftermarket parts. The engine has to live with stock-based components. That means the foundation has to be right.
Straight cylinders.
Proper hone finish.
Correct clearances.
Stable oil pressure.
Good ring seal.
Reliable timing.
Clean sealing surfaces.
Those things matter on track.
They matter even more on a street car that needs to start every morning, run cool in traffic, survive road trips, and keep going for years.
The racing program teaches us what survives.
The street engine gets the benefit.

Why SneedSpeed?
SneedSpeed does not build engines around hype.
We build them around what works.
If we would not run a part in our own engines, we do not sell it. If a shortcut will fail on track, it does not belong in a street engine.
