N16 SneedSpeed Crate Engine
Street Series
The N16 SneedSpeed Crate Engine is a fully assembled long block for R55–R61 MINI Cooper models equipped with the naturally aspirated N16 engine.
This engine exists because the N16 does not need gimmicks. It needs to be built correctly.
We know that because we race this platform.
SneedSpeed builds and supports SCCA B-Spec MINI race cars based around the N16 engine. In B-Spec, you do not get to hide behind exotic parts, giant power numbers, or marketing hype. The rules require stock-based engine configurations, which means reliability comes down to the fundamentals:
- Machine work
- Ring seal
- Bearing clearances
- Oil control
- Timing reliability
- Cylinder head condition
- Assembly quality
That is where durable engines are built.
The same lessons that keep an N16 alive during sustained RPM and race abuse are the same lessons that create a better street engine. If an engine survives B-Spec competition on stock-based components, it will survive daily driving, traffic, road trips, and long-term ownership.
Built From Real N16 Racing Experience
Most N16 failures are predictable.
Timing chain wear.
Oil consumption.
Poor sealing.
Worn valve train components.
Cheap rebuilds done without understanding the platform.
The SneedSpeed N16 Street Series was built specifically to solve those problems.
This is not a junkyard pull with fresh gaskets.
This is not a “budget rebuild.”
This is not an engine sprayed with paint and sold as remanufactured.
This is a properly machined and assembled N16 long block built using real MINI racing and street experience.
Core Assembly Standards
Every N16 SneedSpeed Crate Engine includes:
- Fully rebuilt N16 engine block
- New pistons
- New piston rings
- New bearings
- New gaskets and seals
- Balanced rotating assembly
- Refreshed cylinder head
- Corrected N16 wear and failure points
- SneedSpeed assembly, clearance, and inspection standards
- Fully assembled long block ready for installation
Every engine is assembled with focus on oil control, timing system integrity, sealing performance, and long-term durability.
Because reliability is performance.
Street Series Configuration
The N16 SneedSpeed Crate Engine is currently offered in Street Series configuration only.
That is intentional.
The naturally aspirated N16 platform responds best to proper machining, correct assembly, and reliable supporting components — not fake race-tier marketing. The Street Series is built for stock and lightly modified MINIs that need dependable long-term operation.
Street Series Features
- New pistons and rings
- OEM-style connecting rods
- Refreshed cylinder head
- Street-oriented camshaft profile
- Stock-style valve springs
- Smooth idle quality
- Strong low and midrange response
- Factory-like drivability
- Improved long-term reliability
The result is an N16 that feels smoother, tighter, and more dependable than the tired engine that came out of the car.
Why B-Spec Racing Matters to a Street Engine
Most street buyers are not race drivers.
But they still benefit from racing experience.
B-Spec racing is hard on engines. Long sessions, sustained RPM, heat cycles, and constant abuse expose weak machine work and sloppy assembly immediately. Because the rules require stock-based components, the engine has to survive on fundamentals alone.
That means:
- Straight cylinders
- Proper hone finish
- Correct bearing clearances
- Stable oil pressure
- Reliable timing system operation
- Strong ring seal
- Clean sealing surfaces
Those same fundamentals are exactly what make a reliable street engine.
The racing program teaches us what survives.
The street engine gets the benefit.

Why SneedSpeed?
SneedSpeed does not build engines around hype.
We build them around what survives.
If we would not run a part in our own engines, we do not sell it. If a shortcut fails on track, it does not belong in a street engine.
